Come, Holy Spirit.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today the Church celebrates one of the greatest feasts of the Christian year — Pentecost Sunday.
Pentecost is often called the birthday of the Church, because on this day the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and transformed them completely.
1. From Fear to Courage
Before Pentecost, the disciples were afraid.
They were hiding behind locked doors:
- confused
- uncertain
- fearful
But when the Holy Spirit came, everything changed.
The same disciples who were once afraid now began to preach boldly to the world.
👉 The Holy Spirit changes fearful people into courageous witnesses.
2. The Signs of Pentecost
The first reading describes dramatic signs:
- a strong driving wind
- tongues of fire
- many languages being understood
These signs are important.
Wind
Wind represents the breath and power of God.
Fire
Fire symbolizes purification, passion, and divine presence.
Languages
People from many nations understood the apostles.
👉 Pentecost reverses the division of Babel.
The Holy Spirit creates unity among different peoples.
3. The Gift of Peace
In the Gospel, Jesus appears to the disciples and says:
“Peace be with you.”
Then He breathes on them and says:
“Receive the Holy Spirit.”
The Spirit brings:
- peace in fear
- strength in weakness
- hope in discouragement
4. Different Gifts, One Spirit
Saint Paul reminds us that the Holy Spirit gives different gifts to different people.
Not everyone has the same role, but all are important.
Some serve by:
- teaching
- helping
- praying
- encouraging
- leading
- showing kindness
👉 Every Christian has received gifts from the Holy Spirit for the good of the Church.
5. The Holy Spirit in Our Lives
Pentecost is not just a past event.
The Holy Spirit is active today:
- in the Church
- in the sacraments
- in prayer
- in every believer
Sometimes we forget this and try to live only by our own strength.
But Jesus reminds us:
👉 We are never alone.
6. What the Spirit Wants to Do in Us
The Holy Spirit wants to:
- strengthen our faith
- deepen our prayer
- heal our hearts
- unite families and communities
- help us forgive
- guide us to holiness
The question today is not whether the Spirit comes.
The question is:
👉 Are we open to the Holy Spirit?
Conclusion
Dear friends,
Pentecost reminds us that the Church is alive because the Holy Spirit is alive.
May the Spirit fill our hearts with:
- courage instead of fear
- unity instead of division
- faith instead of doubt
- love instead of selfishness
And may we go forth as joyful witnesses of Christ to the world.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Amen.
