From Hosanna to the Cross.
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Year A

From Hosanna to the Cross.

March 29, 2026

From Hosanna to the Cross.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today we begin Holy Week, the most sacred time in the life of the Church. Palm Sunday presents us with a powerful contrast — joy and sorrow, praise and rejection, triumph and suffering.

1. The Joyful Entrance

We begin with Jesus entering Jerusalem. The people shout:

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

They welcome Him as a king:

  • spreading cloaks
  • waving palm branches
  • rejoicing loudly

But there is a misunderstanding.

They expect a political king, someone who will solve their immediate problems.
But Jesus comes as a humble king, riding on a donkey — a king of peace, not power.

2. A Sudden Change

Not long after, the same crowd that shouted “Hosanna” begins to cry:

“Crucify Him!”

What changed?

The people turned away because Jesus did not meet their expectations.

👉 This challenges us:
Do we follow Jesus only when things go our way?
Or do we remain faithful even when the path leads to the Cross?

3. The Passion of Christ

In the Passion narrative, we see:

  • betrayal by Judas
  • denial by Peter
  • abandonment by the disciples
  • injustice from leaders
  • suffering, humiliation, and death

Jesus experiences the full weight of human sin and suffering.

Yet, He does not respond with hatred or revenge.

Instead, He offers:

  • silence
  • patience
  • forgiveness

“Father, forgive them…”

4. The Meaning of the Cross

The Cross is not a sign of defeat.
It is a sign of love.

Jesus gives Himself completely:

  • for our sins
  • for our salvation
  • for our redemption

👉 The Cross shows us how far God is willing to go to save us.

5. Our Place in the Story

Palm Sunday invites us to reflect:

👉 Where am I in this story?

  • Am I like the crowd — praising one moment, turning away the next?
  • Am I like Peter — wanting to be faithful, yet weak?
  • Or am I willing to stand with Christ, even at the Cross?

6. Entering Holy Week

This week is not just something we remember — it is something we enter into.

We are invited to:

  • walk with Jesus
  • reflect deeply
  • pray more intensely
  • participate in the liturgies of Holy Week

Conclusion

Dear friends,

Palm Sunday reminds us that the journey of faith includes both joy and sacrifice.

May we not only wave palms in celebration, but also carry the Cross with Christ in love and faith.

Let us follow Him — not just to Jerusalem — but all the way to Calvary and the Resurrection.

Amen.
